A Day on the Farm

I should be in bed by now, I tell myself as I finish off preparing a large order to be delivered to East Aurora tomorrow. How can it be 11:20pm and I'm still up. The house is quiet, everyone is down for the night, and I find myself reflecting on the day. Barn chores definitely take longer at the moment. I'd like to say it is because we have more mouths to feed, more enclosures to clean out, more water to run, but in actuality, it is because we are in the midst of kidding season, and well, there is nothing like a baby goat to get you to stop a while. That is exactly what we do. We finish up barn chores, find a soft spot in amongst the hay on the floor of the enclosures, settle down with back propped up against the wall and wait. It is not long till the little hop, skip, and a jump of a baby goat catches your eye and puts a smile on your face as one of the little ones comes bounding over. Tess particularly likes cuddles, Thomas on the other hand, well he just likes to know there is something new to climb on and jump off in his enclosure. This was the beginning of my day.

I would like to say that the day kept going this way, but that is just one of the many things that had to get accomplished today. Not long after barn chores it was time to switch gears .... majorly switch gears. There is nothing quite like grade nine algebra to make you want to rush back to the barn, settle back into the hay and pretend like you are not a homeschooling Mum of a grade nine student that is deep in the thick of algebra. I think I would rather be knee deep in cleaning out enclosures, but algebra it was. Thankfully, today found us able to accomplish everything we needed to in the lesson and our son was able to pull a good grade, not bad considering algebra has been known to bring a kid down (and not the baby goat kind!).

Next, was the much-awaited arrival of the oven repair guy. Yes, we have been without a stove for a little over a week now. My creativity using the instapot and crockpot have been sorely challenged, and I must admit to being quite pleased at the arrival of the gentleman. Alas, it was not to last long as the problem was found, and a new part was ordered. I guess I am going to have to get really creative for Easter dinner this year - I really do not think it has been successfully achieved to make Yorkshire puddings in the instapot - but you never know there is always a first time.

By the time the oven repair guy had left, we had eaten a late lunch (very late lunch) and finished up a couple of chores around the house. It was back over to the barn to check on expectant does and put everyone away for the night.

I do not think I would swap this life I find myself living with my family. Sure, there are days when things do not quite go as planned, and some days you think you would rather be anywhere doing anything than what you are right now (like algebra!). However, the good days far outweigh the bad. The baby goat cuddles remind us all of why we are on this journey and the thankfulness we have to be able to do what we do. As our summer soaps cure ready for the launch of our summer line, as the lotions await labelling, and the deodorant tubes wait to be filled, as the hour gets late and my bed calls my name, I am thankful, tired but thankful.

Thank you for supporting us, thank you for your kind words and testimonies about our products. Thank you for following us on this journey, and hey if you are an Algebra wiz and find yourself in Fillmore, be sure to look us up!
